Remote monitoring and smart management at the M2M Evolution
Wednesday, 29 January 2014
A complete immersion into the world of the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine to machine (M2M) communications is the promise on offer at the M2M Evolution Conference & Expo that kicked off today with the so-called Battle of the Platforms at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
With an exhibition area, lectures, keynote speakers, demonstrations, workshops and case studies, this meeting is an attempt to show how to take advantage of M2M technology in both applications for industry (supply chain, fleet management, energy management) and for consumers (display market, retail solution, digital signage, smart homes).
Over and above the projections and futurology, M2M technology is already impacting on our lives and businesses. And perhaps the most specific application of all the current developments is remote monitoring and smart management of an ever more diverse range of processes, goods, devices…
On the entrepreneurial plane, M2M implementations enable the improvement of production and distribution processes to guarantee the optimal management of the entire supply chain. Through modular, customized solutions, the risk factors are managed and more immediate and accurate responses can be furnished.
Asset Tracking solutions, for example, provide real-time monitoring of all goods and materials to check up on their location and status, with notifications of changes and alerts when certain events occur (shelves are out-of-stock, asset has left the warehouse).
In the same sense, the Fleet Management solutions allow companies not only to locate and track each vehicle, but also to monitor their drivers’ driving styles in order to optimize times, routes and operating costs. This facilitates the end-to-end management of their fleets by improving workflow and guaranteeing the safety of goods, transports and employees.
M2M has also proved its effectiveness in the maintenance and administration of plant and buildings. With Smart Office and Smart Building solutions, it is possible to automate and remotely control maintenance systems, lighting, climate control, security and energy. This ensures a suitable working atmosphere, complying with regulations and rationalizing expenditure.
While industry is highlighting efficiency and cost reductions, for the citizen in the street the buzzwords are savings, convenience and security. The M2M Evolution Conference will take the concept of smart appliances to a whole new level of smart home solutions, remote surveillance, energy management and domotics.
The agenda also includes talks on the potential of M2M technology to improve consumers’ experience through point-of-sale solutions, kiosks, screens and a wide variety of digital signage options.
Industry analysts, operators, application providers, developers and device manufacturers will be discussing the evolution of M2M technology and the Internet of Things until January 31st.
